M Installer

Installer app streamlines setup, guides configuration, and enables remote monitoring for efficient management of cameras, alarms, and sensors.

PROBLEM

Too much programming and system info overloads users, making setup complex and increasing the chance of configuration errors or confusion.

RESEARCH INSIGHTS

To uncover pain points in the current process of installing and configuring smart security systems, I conducted interviews with professional installers. The goal was to understand their workflows, frustrations, and needs when managing sites, users, and hardware components.

After speaking with 15 installers and reviewing their feedback, I identified two primary challenges that consistently impacted their efficiency and satisfaction:

  • Overwhelming system complexity due to the amount of programming and technical information required during setup.

  • Fragmented workflows that forced installers to switch between multiple tools or interfaces, increasing the risk of errors.

Key Insights from Installer Feedback

60% of installers valued the depth of programming options and system information, which enables accurate and tailored configurations.

42% reported that navigating between different tools or screens during setup slows down their workflow and increases the chance of errors.

• When asked, “What would improve your installation experience?”, most installers requested a more streamlined interface with smart defaults and contextual guidance.

Competitive Analysis

Installer tools from Hikvision, Ajax, and Paradox dominate the market, offering deep system control but often at the cost of usability. A competitive analysis revealed that installers struggle with complex interfaces and fragmented workflows across these platforms.

Hikvision provides powerful features but lacks intuitive design. Ajax is more user-friendly but limited in customization. These gaps show the need for a unified app that balances advanced control with a streamlined, installer-friendly experience.

Concept & Creation

Survey and competitor analysis revealed two major pain points for installers: too much complexity and scattered setup tools. Existing solutions weren’t meeting the needs of professionals in the field.

This led to the creation of the Installer App—a concept tool built from the ground up to simplify security system setup.

WHAT IS THE INSTALLER APP?

A unified, professional-grade platform that brings system programming, configuration, and diagnostics into one place. It offers two setup modesfast for quick installs, and advanced for full control—tailored to different installer workflows and experience levels.

User Persona

To better understand how to design for both experienced technicians and newer installers, User Personas were created for key user types. Below is a brief version of David's persona, a 32-year-old security system installer based in Cape Town who works independently and values speed, clarity, and full control. David was used to guide decisions for users who need efficient, professional tools without unnecessary complexity.

Details

• 32 years old
• Lives in Cape Town, South Africa
• Independent security system installer
• Works on both residential and commercial sites
• 10+ years of field experience

USE CASE

• Installs 3–5 systems per week
• Frequently works under tight timeframes and client pressure
• Uses both PC and mobile tools while on site
• Needs fast access to programming and diagnostics without jumping between interfaces
• Often installs multiple brands—wants one tool that can simplify his workflow
• First discovered the app through a recommendation from a fellow technician
• Prefers function over form but appreciates clean, well-organized design
• Wants a solution that helps him onboard junior techs more easily

Early Iterations / Sketches

The original goal of the Installer App was to create a streamlined and efficient setup experience while maintaining a professional-grade level of control. Early concepts explored ways to reduce installer fatigue and boost task completion by introducing guided flows and subtle motivational elements.

One early idea involved showing real-time setup progress and system health indicators directly on the home screen to encourage faster, cleaner installations. At this stage, a "device readiness tracker" and status badges were introduced. Ultimately, I focused on a guided configuration path that adapts based on user input—helping installers stay focused, avoid errors, and complete setup faster.

USER FLOWs

The goal of this user flow was to introduce guidance at a natural point—after device detection—without disrupting installer momentum. This placement keeps the flow fast and flexible, supporting experienced users while offering structured help to those who need it, ensuring setup remains efficient, clear, and adaptable throughout.

Retrospective

Stepping back after completing this project gave me space to reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and how I’d refine the process moving forward. Below are a few key takeaways from building the Installer App experience:

So, what went well?

• The Figma flow was kept clear and structured—helping me stay focused across a complex system.

• Survey feedback from real installers directly shaped the app’s priorities and features.

• Designing for both power users and newcomers pushed me to create flexible, scalable flows.

• Balancing system logic with clean UI elements felt rewarding and elevated the experience.
